Behavioral Interview Questions
Tell me about yourself?
Why is this question asked?
- Mainly to know the candidates’ strength
- How well and efficiently one communicates
Things to keep in mind:
- Do not underestimate the time it takes to prepare for this question
- Use mirror or record the voice and play it back and allocate some time for this question
- Do not make it sound like enumeration…things like what is given in the resume.
- Sometimes interviewer is using this as a starting point… so focus on strengths and then focus on the path you prefer
- The best way to evaluate the quality of the answer is to listen to what you said and think about whether it is good/ok/bad?
- Keep it around 1.5 minutes…or shorter…but do not go for long winding speech
- What sounds great to you is likely to be the same for others
Examples:
My version:
- I have over 20+ years of experience mostly between HP and NetApp with a couple of years in IBM. I also had the privilege of working in different capacities in my 20 year career…mostly in software engineering roles starting as engineer and working my way through to senior manager. Later I moved to business analytics and data science domain in individual contributor role and for past 7 years working as data scientist/machine learning engineer.
- Currently, as a data scientist, I led multiple projects for
different departments within NetApp…In no particular order, some
of them are:
- Developing and deploying a virtual chat assistant.
- Predicting support cases that are likely to be escalated
- Developing models to assist support engineers to resolve cases quickly
- Predicting sales pipeline
